Workplace Safety & OSHA Basics

This course provides Florida-licensed beauty professionals with foundational knowledge of OSHA workplace safety standards and their application in professional beauty settings. In 30 minutes of self-study instruction, participants learn to recognize common workplace hazards in salon, spa, and nail studio environments, understand their rights and responsibilities under federal and state safety requirements, and apply basic protective practices in their daily professional work.

The course covers OSHA’s purpose and the general duty that employers have to provide a hazard-free workplace. Participants learn to identify chemical, physical, and biological hazards specific to beauty environments — including exposure to disinfectants, sharp implements, slippery surfaces, and bloodborne pathogens. Both employer and employee safety responsibilities are addressed, with emphasis on the individual professional’s obligation to follow posted safety procedures, use required protective equipment, and report hazardous conditions.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) selection and use are covered in practical terms, with direct application to gloves, masks, and eye protection used in beauty service settings. Hazard communication (HazCom) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) requirements are introduced so participants understand how to access and interpret chemical safety information for the products they use daily. The course concludes with a review of incident reporting expectations and the elements of a positive workplace safety culture.
