About Course

This self-study continuing education program is designed for tax professionals who represent clients before the IRS or who prepare returns that may be subject to IRS examination. The course provides a comprehensive and practical review of IRS notices and correspondence — what they mean, how to respond, and how to protect clients from escalating penalties and collection actions.

Participants will learn to identify and correctly interpret the most common IRS CP notices and examination letters, understand the legal deadlines and response procedures that govern each type of correspondence, and apply penalty abatement strategies and appeals rights available to taxpayers and their representatives. The course addresses the full cycle of IRS notice response — from initial receipt through resolution — with an emphasis on documentation, client communication, and professional standards under Circular 230.

Upon completion, participants will be equipped to confidently handle IRS notices on behalf of clients, avoid common practitioner errors in notice response, and advise clients on their rights and options at each stage of the IRS correspondence and collections process.
