About Course

This course provides Florida-licensed beauty professionals with foundational and practical knowledge of the chemical makeup of professional beauty products and the safety principles required for their correct use in licensed practice. Over 60 minutes of self-study instruction organized into two 30-minute modules, participants develop a working understanding of how beauty products are formulated, how their active and functional ingredients behave, and how to handle them safely to protect themselves, their clients, and their work environment.

Module 1 addresses the chemical composition of beauty products used in cosmetology, nail, and facial practice. Participants learn the major ingredient categories — active ingredients, carriers, preservatives, emulsifiers, and fragrance components — and how each functions in product performance. Common product families including hair color, chemical relaxers, permanent wave solutions, nail acrylics, and skin care preparations are examined in terms of their chemistry, intended action on the hair or skin, and the chemical reactions they produce. Participants also learn how pH affects product behavior and why understanding formulation is essential to achieving predictable, safe results.

Module 2 focuses on the practical application of chemical safety in beauty settings. Topics include reading and interpreting product labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS), recognizing incompatible product combinations and the chemical reactions they may produce, ventilation requirements for chemical services, proper storage and disposal of chemical products, and the professional’s responsibility for communicating chemical safety information to clients. Content is aligned with Florida DBPR requirements for licensed beauty practice and applicable federal standards under OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard.
